1. Particular Foreign Currency
Under Section 6(e) of the Negotiable Instruments Law (Act Number 2031), the validity and negotiable character of an instrument are not affected by the fact that it designates a particular kind of current money in which payment is to be made. Furthermore, Republic Act Number 8183 repealed the Uniform Currency Act, explicitly permitting monetary obligations in the Philippines to be settled in foreign currencies agreed upon by the parties, such as United States Dollars.

2. Particular Fund Doctrine
Under Section 3 of the Negotiable Instruments Law, an order or promise to pay out of a particular fund is not unconditional, which renders the instrument non-negotiable. In contrast, an order or promise to pay that is coupled with an indication of a particular fund out of which reimbursement is to be made, or a particular account to be debited with the amount, remains unconditional and negotiable.

3. Additional Act Prohibition
Under Section 5 of the Negotiable Instruments Law, an instrument which contains an order or promise to do any act in addition to the payment of money is non-negotiable. The statutory requirement that a negotiable instrument must contain an unconditional promise or order to pay a sum certain in money precludes adding non-monetary performance obligations, such as an undertaking to paint a portrait or render personal services.
