1. CBA Automatic Renewal
Under Article 253 of the Labor Code, both the employer and the bargaining agent are legally obligated to keep the status quo and continue in full force and effect the terms and conditions of an existing Collective Bargaining Agreement during negotiations for a new agreement. This statutory automatic renewal clause ensures that economic and non-economic benefits granted under the expired agreement remain active and enforceable until a new CBA is formally executed and signed. Consequently, employers cannot unilaterally terminate or withhold existing CBA benefits simply because the agreement's term has lapsed.

2. Holdover Principle Effect
The holdover principle dictates that upon the expiration of a Collective Bargaining Agreement, all provisions—including wage increases, allowances, and midyear or Christmas bonuses—continue to bind the parties until a replacement agreement is finalized. The purpose of this doctrine is to maintain industrial peace and prevent employers from using contract expiration as leverage to compel labor unions into accepting unfavorable terms. As long as negotiations or deadlocks persist, the expired CBA remains the legal governing framework between the employer and its employees.

3. Midyear Bonus Entitlement
When a midyear bonus is explicitly stipulated in a Collective Bargaining Agreement, it becomes a contractual obligation rather than a mere voluntary gratuity. By operation of the automatic renewal clause under the Labor Code, the right to receive the midyear bonus subsists even after the CBA's formal expiration date. An employer's refusal to pay the bonus during a negotiation deadlock constitutes a clear violation of the status quo and an unlawful diminution of benefits under statutory labor standards.
